The tangled web

May 15, 2013

“The problem with telling a lie, or even a succession of lies, is that a very small dose of the truth can sometimes make the whole thing collapse like a house of cards. The State Department’s own foreign service officer Gregory Hicks was in Libya during the attack, so he knew the truth. When threats were not enough to silence him, it was then necessary to try to discredit him. After years of getting glowing job evaluations, and awards of honors from the State Department for his work in various parts of the world, Mr. Hicks suddenly began to get bad job evaluations and was demoted to a desk job in Washington after he spoke with a Congressman about what he knew. The truth is dangerous to liars.”  ―Thomas Sowell

“As Mr. Hicks testified, his superiors in Washington knew early that night that a well-executed terrorist attack with the possible participation of al-Qaeda elements was under way. Instead of responding, the most powerful figures in the government decided that an unseen YouTube video better served their political needs. And, in the most revealing glimpse of the administration’s depravity, the president and secretary of state peddled the lie even in their mawkish eulogies to their buddy ‘Chris’ and three other dead Americans. They lied to the victims’ coffins and then strolled over to lie to the bereaved, Hillary telling the Woods family that ‘we’re going to have that person arrested and prosecuted that did the video.’ And she did. The government dispatched more firepower to arrest Nakoula Basseley Nakoula in Los Angeles than it did to protect its mission in Benghazi. It was such a great act of misdirection Hillary should have worn spangled tights and sawn Stevens’s casket in half.” ―Mark Steyn

“The Obama administration undoubtedly understood that its decision to leave defenseless Americans, including our ambassador, to needlessly die at the hands of al-Qaeda-linked jihadists would not go over well for a commander-in-chief in the throes of a presidential election and a secretary of state angling for the Oval Office in 2016. Hicks’ testimony affirmed suspicions that administration officials conspired to conceal the nature of the attack by concocting an absolutely fictitious account of events involving a ‘spontaneous’ attack prompted by an anti-Islam YouTube video. Hicks testified that he had personally told former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the Benghazi raid was a terrorist attack at 2 a.m. that same night. He recounted that ‘everybody in the mission’ believed it was an act of terror ‘from the get-go,’ a reality echoed by Libyan President Mohammed al-Magariaf, who said his government had ‘no doubt that this was pre-planned, predetermined.’ Magariaf made this assertion the very day before UN ambassador Susan Rice went out to peddle the lie that a ‘spontaneous demonstration’ had gotten out of hand due to an Internet video. When Hicks heard Rice, he was appalled. ‘My jaw dropped, and I was embarrassed,’ he said.” ―Arnold Ahlert

“It remains little short of astonishing that the administration made no contingency plans for trouble in the terrorist hotbed of Benghazi on the anniversary of 9/11. Were they afraid news of such preparation would leak out, jeopardizing Obama’s ‘all is well in Libya’ political narrative? Hicks said he was eager to see Special Forces units arrive, ‘because we had already essentially stripped ourselves of our security presence, or our security capability to the bare minimum.’ As [Sharyl] Attkisson observes, ‘The account from Gregory Hicks is in stark contrast to assertions from the Obama administration, which insisted that nobody was ever told to stand down and that all available resources were utilized.’” ―John Hayward

“Special operations forces were told, twice, by their chain of command not to board aircraft to Benghazi to rescue the Americans then under attack. The U.S. deputy diplomat, Greg Hicks, testified that the military commander, Lt. Col. Gibson, had his team ready to go twice. They were on the runway about to board a flight to Benghazi in the middle of the attack. They were ordered to stand down and remain in Tripoli to receive wounded who would be coming out of Benghazi. One of the orders came in the middle of the attack, the other came toward the end after Hicks’ team had traveled from Tripoli to Benghazi. The fact that Hicks’ team was able get to Benghazi before the end of the assault strongly suggests that the special operations team could have made a real difference.

“At the same time, the State Department’s commander on the scene, Hicks, ordered his personnel into Benghazi and went there himself. Hicks testified that Gibson never told him who issued the stand-down orders. He commented that Gibson told him that the military stand-down was a shock: ‘This is the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than someone in the military.’” ―Bryan Preston

“By the time the 11th anniversary of 9/11 rolled around, the stage was set for disaster. Not only had the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton’s State Department not prepared one of its most-vulnerable diplomatic outposts for a terrorist attack on the anniversary of al Qaeda’s greatest success, they had reduced security and ignored the pleas of their own ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens. … Only after more than a week had passed would the Obama administration admit what had been painfully obvious: Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorists had staged a coordinated attack on the consulate and another on a safe house a few hours later, and an amateurish YouTube video had nothing to do with it.” ―Edward Morrissey

“Obama and Clinton have insisted that they did everything they could to help the Americans besieged in Libya; they just couldn’t get help to them in time. That’s simply untrue. But even if that were true, it would still be a self-serving falsehood.

“If you see a child struggling in the ocean, you have no idea how long she will flail and paddle before she goes under for the last time. The moral response is to swim for her in the hope that you get there in time. If you fail and she dies, you can console yourself that you did your best to rescue her. But if you just stand on the beach and do nothing as the child struggles for life, saying, ‘Well, there’s just no way I can get to her in time,’ it doesn’t really matter whether you guessed right or not. You didn’t try.

“The White House and State Department insist they guessed right, as if that somehow absolves them of responsibility. They would have sent help if they could have, they claim, but they simply weren’t ready to deploy forces on Sept. 11, the one day of the year you’d expect our military and intelligence agencies to be ready for trouble in the Middle East, particularly given that before his murder, Stevens warned of security problems in Benghazi.

“But we know the administration ordered others who were willing, able and obliged to come to the consulate’s rescue to ‘stand down.’ They in effect told the lifeguards, ‘Don’t get out of your chairs.’ Though an unmanned drone was there to capture the whole thing on video, which must have been reassuring as the mortar rounds rained down.” ―Jonah Goldberg

He had a dream…

April 4, 2013

Martin the Dreamer

Today is the 45th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. I won’t presume to speak for a man I never met, who died when I was in eighth grade; but based on what King said when he was alive, I suspect that if he were still with us today, he would be appalled at what is going on in the country that he loved.

King was a dreamer. He dreamed of a day when the quantity of melanin in a person’s skin would be irrelevant, when character would be what mattered. Listening to the speeches he gave toward the end of his life, you can’t help feeling that he really believed his dream would come true some day — even that he might live to see it.

It was a lovely dream, but what we have ended up with is the opposite: a country where skin color matters more than ever, and character and achievement are irrelevant. We have a country where persons of color are held to lower standards than persons of pallor — what George W. Bush called “the soft bigotry of low expectations.” We have a country where black on white crime is far more common than white on black crime, but the former is seldom reported (and when it is, the race of the perpetrator is rarely mentioned); while the latter, when it occurs, receives massive media coverage and sparks demonstrations and riots and all manner of mayhem. We have a country where tests of any sort are denounced as racist and declared invalid if whites score better on them, on average, than blacks. We have a country where institutions of higher learning employ racial quotas to achieve “diversity,” even when it means that less-qualified black applicants receive preference over more-qualified white applicants. We have a country where it’s acceptable to gerrymander congressional districts in order to get a congressperson of a specific color elected.

But for conclusive proof that racism is alive and well, one need look no further than Barack Obama — the man Harry Reid described approvingly as a light-skinned Negro without the Negro dialect, the man Joe Biden described admiringly as the first black candidate for president who was clean and articulate and good-looking, the man who gives Chris Matthews a thrill up his leg every time he reads words off a teleprompter.

Candidate Obama’s qualifications to be president were practically nonexistent; a white man of either party with a résumé like his would have been laughed out of the primaries. But as we all know now, that didn’t matter. The American people were so excited about electing the first black president that the fact that Obama lacked any executive experience and had never distinguished himself academically, professionally, or as an elected official didn’t matter a hill of beans. The lamestream media had collective orgasms over the man, swooning and hyperventilating whenever he came into view, rhapsodizing over his superhuman intelligence and matchless beauty, sweeping his frequent gaffes under the rug, and relentlessly informing all of us unworthy peasants just how blessed we were that this incomparable paragon of brilliance and virtue was actually willing to serve as our president… and warning us in no uncertain terms that anyone who failed to vote for Obama was a despicable racist scumbag.

It became painfully obvious as the 2008 election approached that we were doomed to have this pathetically unqualified and hopelessly misguided man as our president, and those of us whose brains were still functioning knew from the get-go that his presidency was going to be a disaster. But we gritted our teeth and waited for the four miserable years to pass, hoping that once the voters saw what a terrible president Obama was, they would snap out of their reverie, come to their senses, and vote him out of office.

This was not an unreasonable expectation. If a white president of either party had presided over four years as miserable as the four years that Obama had just presided over, he would almost certainly have had a primary challenge from someone in his own party (as happened to the luckless Jimmy Carter), and had he survived that, he would have been trounced in the general election (as also happened to Carter). No white president who was as incompetent and manifestly unfit for the office as Barack Obama would have been re-elected.

But in twenty-first century America, black presidents are not held to as high a standard as white presidents. The voters simply refused to treat Barack Obama the way they have always treated white incumbents whose terms in office were disasters. The inescapable conclusion is that American voters just don’t expect as much from a black president. He isn’t held responsible for his failures, as a white president would be; in fact, the voters give him a second chance — something they would never do for a failed white president.

And Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream — that character and achievement would some day matter more than color — seems farther away than ever.

Democrats declare war on women

March 10, 2013

In last November’s election, two Republican Senate candidates who were favored to win their races ended up getting shellacked at the polls after each made an excruciatingly idiotic statement about rape. These blunders gave the Democrats and the lamestream media (but I repeat myself) exactly what they craved most — something that was not just embarrassing to the Republican party, but also a great distraction from the issues that were working against the Democrat party in general and Barack Obama in particular: the economy, unemployment, budget deficits, the Benghazi debacle, and corruption in the executive branch, among other things. The entire focus of the election shifted away from the flailing economy and Democrat incompetence to what those horrible misogynist Republicans supposedly think about rape.

Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock didn’t just destroy the Republicans’ chances of taking the Senate; they also helped to sink Mitt Romney and other Republican candidates who were perceived to share their views — a mostly false perception, but one that was endlessly reinforced by the lamestream media, which demonstrated its usual level of regard for the truth (i.e., none whatsoever).

How quickly things change. In the midst of the recent brouhaha over gun violence and government attempts to chip away at the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens, it’s Democrats who have been making all the idiotic statements about rape. Listen to this example of unbridled stupidity from Democrat Joe Salazar, a Colorado state legislator — but be forewarned that this jackass makes Akin and Mourdock look like geniuses by comparison:

Luckily for Salazar, his party affiliation rendered him immune from the type of treatment that Akin and Mourdock received at the hands of the oh-so-fair-and-impartial media.

Then there’s the brilliant advice Joe Biden gave to American women:

How does someone without a brain to call his own get to be vice president of the U.S.? (Yes, that was a rhetorical question; I know how it happened.)

In the next clip, another Democrat strategist proposes an ingenious, surefire method for eliminating the problem: teach rapists not to rape! Why didn’t anyone think of that before?

That great bastion of liberalism the University of Colorado offers women the following advice on how to avoid being raped:

1. Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.

2. Your instinct may be to scream, go ahead! It may startle your attacker and give you an opportunity to run away.

3. Kick off your shoes if you have time and can’t run in them.

4. Don’t take time to look back; just get away.

5. If your life is in danger, passive resistance may be your best defense.

6. Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating.

7. Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.

8. Yelling, hitting or biting may give you a chance to escape, do it!

9. Understand that some actions on your part might lead to more harm.

10. Remember, every emergency situation is different. Only you can decide which action is most appropriate.

In other words, if you’re a female student at U of C, and if for some reason you would prefer not to be raped, forget about carrying a gun. Just make sure that when you venture out, especially at night, you always have a full bladder and a full stomach (you might practice gagging yourself to induce vomiting, if you aren’t already familiar with the technique), and always wear running shoes (or if running shoes aren’t you’re style, at least wear shoes that are easy to kick off). As for the “passive resistance” mentioned in #5, I have no idea what that is, and frankly, I’m afraid to ask. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s a euphemism for “just relax and try to enjoy it.”

If any Republican had come up with a list of suggestions that imbecilic, he would have been lambasted, excoriated, and crucified by the LSM — and rightly so. But since the list was compiled and disseminated by liberals, it didn’t happen. So what do you do when you have a job the American media won’t do? You hire a Mexican, of course. Here are some of Soopermexican’s “Liberal Tips 2 Avoid Rape”:

Yell “racist” at the rapist… that’s like the worst thing ever!

Ask @AmbassadorRice to perform “the Vagina Monologues” in front of your attacker.

Pray to Obama extra hard, and promise to have 3 abortions in his name.

Click your heels three times and invoke a safety zone.

Wait for global warming to cause a meteorite to hit your attacker.

Ask the attacker if you can borrow his Obamaphone to call 911.

Draw an anti-rape circle in the dirt where the rapist can’t get you.

Avoid Occupy protests, the Kennedy Compound, & being alone with Bill Clinton.

The good folks at The Looking Spoon also compiled a list, “Democrat Tips for Avoiding Rape Without Needing Guns.” Here are a few:

Unconditional surrender, then it’s not technically “rape.”

Tell your attacker you forgot to take the pill for that day.

Get their name, then threaten to tag them as a rapist on Facebook.

Remind the attacker that they are in a “rape-free zone.”

Accuse them of being sexist for only targeting female victims.

Since Obamacare allows insurance for preexisting conditions, get a sex change.

To sum up the difference between the Democrats and Republicans: The party that wants to disarm women so as to make them easier prey for rapists — and also thinks that assigning women to combat is a really swell idea — is pro-women. The party that thinks women should be armed and able to defend themselves against attackers is anti-women. Uh-huh. Makes perfect sense.

When they come for your guns and ammo, let them have the ammo first

January 3, 2013

If there’s one thing you can be sure of these days, it’s that whenever some sociopath grabs a gun and starts mowing down innocent people (usually in a “gun-free zone”), politicians, professors, and professional entertainers will come out in mass to demand gun prohibition. As William S. Burroughs once observed, “After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it.”

In reaction to the recent atrocity at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a gaggle of lamebrained celebrity types got together and produced an incredibly stupid video called “Demand a Plan” — as if sociopathic behavior occurs because we lack a “plan.” Here it is, if you think you can stand it:

I’m so out of touch with popular culture that I didn’t know who half those people were, but apparently a lot of them got rich and famous by making movies and television shows that are just chock full of violence, including gun violence galore. Here’s one of several videos that were made in response to “Demand a Plan” that highlight the hypocrisy of the celebrities involved (WARNING – extremely graphic violence):

Or, put another way:

(Other video responses to Demand a Plan can be seen here and here [warning: crude language].)

Meanwhile, our celebrity president, who is surrounded at all times by bodyguards armed to the teeth with state-of-the-art weaponry, and whose two daughters attend an elite private school that employs eleven armed guards, is just salivating at the prospect of taking guns away from law-abiding citizens. From his point of view, it makes perfect sense; there’s nothing a would-be dictator likes better than an unarmed populace. And if more of us peasants have to die as a result of being unable to defend ourselves against criminals, it’s no skin off his nose. His security detail is in no danger of being disarmed, ever.

If the gun prohibition crowd gets its way, we can look forward to the entire country ending up like Chicago, which has some of the strictest gun control in the country and (by remarkable coincidence) some of the very highest homicide rates.

Fighting for the working man. No, literally.

December 13, 2012

(The following appeared on Planet Moron on December 12, 2012 and is reprinted with permission.)

There has been some controversy of late over a little tussle that occurred in Michigan where state legislators were voting on a “right to work” law that could potentially undermine union influence and power in the state. Naturally, union members turned out to protest the law however some people have misinterpreted their enthusiasm and vigor. To help clear things up we thought we’d address the confusion with a quick Q&A:

Q: What happened? It appeared that union members physically attacked people engaging in constitutionally protected free speech.

A: No, no, nothing could be further from the truth.

Q: Look at the video, one guy just started laying in on Steven Crowder with left and right roundhouse punches.

A: That was just a metaphor.

Q: A metaphor?

A: Sure. The individual was simply expressing the essential conflict between left and right common in non-parliamentary democracies in which two dominant parties typically “fight it out” if you will, in the field of ideas.

Q: But he was literally punching the guy in the face in an actual field.

A: Think of his face as a canvas on which the union member/interpretive artist was painting a picture.

Q: The guy punched him in the face! This is absolutely outrageous and under no circumstances can it be allowed to go unpunished.

A: Whoa, whoa, easy on the inflammatory rhetoric there. You wouldn’t want to incite some Tea Party nut into engaging in violence, such as criticizing Obamacare, or possibly creating a sign expressing disapproval of the current administration.

Q: That’s violent?

A: Absolutely. Violent to anyone’s sense of fairness.

Q: What about actual violence, like physically tearing down a tent with people still inside?

A: That was a misunderstanding.

Q: What about the Michigan legislator who promised “there will be blood?”

A: Hey, that could mean anything.

Q: And why isn’t the media paying any attention to this? They turned over rocks looking for signs of Tea Party violence but they can’t be bothered to report on this?

A: Report on what?

Q: The union violence and threats from elected Democrats?

A: There was union violence and threats from elected Democrats?

Q: Yes.

A: Well, we didn’t read anything about that in the papers…

A victory for mendacity, greed, and stupidity

November 15, 2012

H. L. Mencken famously said that nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public. If he were alive today, he might note that no Democrat ever lost the presidency by underestimating the intelligence of the American electorate.

How did the worst president in living memory win a second term? Yes, there was widespread and massive election fraud. Yes, the media were once again in the tank for Obama, even more flagrantly so than in 2008. Still, the fact remains that about half of the country’s population was willing, even eager, to re-elect an incompetent bungler whose first term in office had been nothing but a disaster from start to finish. Astonishing.

Much has been said about the fact that a large and increasing number of voters are getting so much free stuff from the government that they will automatically vote for the party that promises to keep the freebies coming. That kind of childish irresponsibility and selfishness is a moral problem whose remedy lies outside the realm of politics. Somewhere along the line, too many parents failed to teach their children the simple economic truth that there is no such thing as a free lunch (or free birth control pills, or a free Obamaphone). Someone has to pay for all the loot that government doles out to its favored constituencies, and no, raising taxes on the rich won’t solve the problem. Even if you’re stupid enough to believe that the rich will just roll over and allow all their wealth to be confiscated, there still wouldn’t be enough to fund government spending at anything remotely resembling its current levels.

But just as troubling as this moral failure is the failure of intelligence that caused millions of voters to believe the outrageous lies that Barack Obama and his gang of thugs told about a good, honest, and honorable man, a man whose shoes they are not fit to shine. Day after day, we heard: Romney became wealthy by impoverishing other people. Romney gives terminal cancer to the wives of men who have lost their health insurance because they lost their jobs (which is also Romney’s fault). Romney is cruel to animals. Romney is an old meanie who never gave his garbage man a hug. Romney wants to kill Big Bird. Romney wants to make contraception illegal. Romney doesn’t pay any taxes himself, but he wants to raise your taxes. Romney wants women to be paid less than men. Romney wants to put black people back in chains. Romney wants to kick Grandma off Social Security and Medicare, and take Medicaid and housing assistance and food stamps away from poor people, and so on ad nauseam.

Romney seldom responded publicly to the lies being told about him, a failure for which he’s now being castigated by some conservative commentators. Why didn’t he defend himself? Because the lies were just so outrageous, so outlandish, so ridiculous that he honestly didn’t see how anyone could possibly fall for them — so he refused to dignify them with a response. In other words, he gave the American people credit for more intelligence than they actually possess. And he lost.

I too was guilty of thinking the American people were smarter than they really are, which is why I was in absolute shock when I heard that Obama had been re-elected. How, I wondered, could anyone who had lived through Obama’s first term volunteer for another four years of the same misery and suffering? Are we a nation of masochists? Or just a nation of imbeciles?

When Obama won the presidency in 2008, the following editorial comment appeared in the Czech Republic Observer, and it’s as relevant today as it was then:

The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.

Romney bet on the voters’ maturity and intelligence. Obama bet on their greed, gullibility, and stupidity. Obama won; America lost.
