No matter how cynical I get, I just can’t keep up

Have you heard about the woman in Oak Park, Michigan, who was threatened with prosecution for growing vegetables in her front yard? Well, Gould, Arkansas (population 850), apparently envious of Oak Park for all the media attention it was getting for its prohibition on vegetable growing, has come up with an asinine ordinance of its own: The city council of Gould wants to make it illegal for residents to form new civic organizations or to discuss city matters among themselves unless they first obtain the council’s permission.

Yes, you read that correctly. The proposed ordinance would make it illegal to form a citizens’ group without permission from the city council, and it would prohibit discussion of city matters at any kind of gathering — including the Kiwanis pancake breakfast, the church ladies’ quilting circle, the garden club, even in one’s own home — without permission from the city council.
