Like everyone else of my generation, I slept sat through many years of world and U.S. history classes in elementary, junior high, and high school. The history textbooks inflicted upon us had been written by committees of sadists who hated children and who did their level best to take an inherently interesting subject and render it insufferably dull. But since my liberation from prison school thirty-six years ago, history has become one of my favorite subjects — to the point that there are entire bookshelves in my house filled with books of history, along with a multitude of history courses on CD from The Teaching Company.
