Happy anniversary, Mickey and Minnie

Today is the 86th anniversary of the premiere of “Steamboat Willie,” which was the first film starring Mickey and Minnie Mouse to be shown in theaters, although it was not the first film they appeared in. The two mice had actually made their debut a few months earlier in “Plane Crazy,” which failed to find a distributor in 1928 and was not released until the following year, after the success of “Steamboat Willie” had made stars of Mickey and Minnie.

Like most cartoons of the era, “Plane Crazy” has something to offend almost everyone, including violence, cruelty to animals, gender stereotyping, and unwanted sexual aggression. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
