  2. Sweet!

A couple of months ago my stepdaughter and I rescued three starving chocolate lab puppies off the highway. They were adorable, but quite a handful. I am so glad we finally found good loving homes for them.

      • Thank you. I had to, you know? Since June, I have rescued an injured wild grackle bird, a starving long haired tortoise shell tabby cat, a pitbull terrier mix, and the aforementioned chocolate lab puppies. We have found loving homes for all but the pitbull and the bird, which apparently flew away.

So… do you want an adorable super loving 55 pound dog who constantly wants outside, then back inside, then back outside, then back inside? She is truly beautiful, she has one blue eye and one brown eye. We call her Baby. She gets along very well with Scrappy, the 18 pound male poodle we found two years ago on the highway.

My husband believes that Baby is the cattle dog we lost two years ago, reincarnated. I need to ask his doctor about changing his meds. Because seriously, if Lady wanted to be reincarnated so she could live with us again, she would know better than to come back as a dog that sheds!

        • Wow, you really do run a rescue operation! You make me feel like a slacker… even though I’m currently living with five cats, all of them rescues. Four of them are cats my kids rescued back when they still lived with me. Only one of my kids actually took her cats with her when she grew up and moved out; the others all had reasons why they couldn’t take theirs. All of them have since been adopted by either stray cats, shelter cats, or in my son’s case, two cats that belonged to his then-girlfriend who was moving to an apartment where she couldn’t keep pets. The ex-girlfriend is now engaged to someone else, but my son still has custody of the cats.

          • Aww, I love cats, but my husband is very allergic. We only have the two dogs now, the poodle and the pit, plus my stepdaughter has three chihuahua whippet mixes. We don’t mean to be animal rescuers, we don’t go looking for critters to rescue. They just keep coming to us!

The pit bull, for example, was outside a Dollar General store when we came out. Skin and bone, desperately thirsty in 105 degree heat. I gave her my water, then my stepdaughter went back in the store and brought some food. She asked the clerk about the dog and was told she had been hanging around for three months and the dog catcher had been by a couple of times but couldn’t catch her. (She can run like a rocket!) My stepdaughter fed her right out of her hands and the poor thing was so sweet, so… even though I did not want another dog, especially not that breed, well, I guess she is ours now. She sleeps in our bed, with the poodle.

          • All of my kids had an uncanny knack for finding starving mangy little strays, and I was never able to say “no” when they begged to be allowed to keep them. One time my son came home with a skinny tick-infested kitten he’d found while I was out grocery shopping. His sisters were thrilled. According to the story that was told to me later, my middle daughter said, “We need to name him quick before Mom gets back — then she’ll have to let us keep him!” (Don’t you love kid logic?) And my youngest daughter said, “Let’s call him Oscar!” because (she said later) that was the first name that popped into her head. The kids are long gone, but Oscar is still here.
