Happy birthday, Enrique

It’s the 150th anniversary of the birth of Spanish pianist and composer Enrique Granados. In 1916, Granados made player piano music rolls of some of his compositions, which is how we are able to hear the composer himself play this excerpt from Danzas Españolas

I’m trying to “like” this but WP is acting weirdly this morning. I’m a big fan of these “live” performances. I have a CD of Gershwin playing Gershwin on piano rolls.

The late Alicia de Larrocha y de la Calle was my introduction to his music, and her precise, light touch gave the music a clarity and beauty that surely would have pleased the composer.

    • She was an amazing pianist. I got to see her perform once, forty-plus years ago, and it blew me away.

I am more than envious! She is/was my favorite pianist, with Rudolph Serkin and Alfred Brendel – sadly only recently deceased – being two others I like for their artistic excellence. Serkin’s “Emperor’s Concerto” cadenzas give me chills and Brendel had a almost wryly humorous take on music, but seriously expressed. (Whatever that meant!) The three leave a body of recordings that will delight us forever!
