The prison one is for real–I have seen some of the signs in person and it’s because they do escape that people get warned. They especially have the signs in boonie areas where someone might pick up hitchhikers otherwise–although it does look like something you’d see at the start of a scary movie in the 80s!

It reminds me of the NH state motto, which was genuinely “Brake For Moose-It Could Save Your Life”–it may still be on license plates there. Who would voluntarily NOT brake for giant animals that could crush your car, even if you aren’t kind enough to care about the animal?
