Happy birthday, George

It’s the birthday of the American actor, dancer, singer, songwriter, playwright, and producer George Michael Cohan (1878-1942). His parents were traveling vaudeville performers, and George and his sister Josephine grew up on the stage as part of the family act. Cohan wrote hundreds of songs, including “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Over There,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “Yankee Doodle Boy.” A musical biopic of Cohan, Yankee Doodle Dandy, was released shortly before Cohan’s death in 1942. James Cagney won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Cohan.

  1. I love it. I had never heard the whole song. I just sang the chorus with the class of students with disabilities who visit us monthly. We usually have lunch and then I do a sing along and they really like this one.

  3. Fell in love with this movie in my teens while visiting my Grandpa Sam. Who was born on the 3rd of July. Sweet memories. I still can’t believe how talented Jimmy Cagney was.
