  1. D’s and F’s in foreign language really damaged my high school GPA and same in college almost prevented mefrom graduating and barely did with 2.0. The best I was going to be able to do was pick up a lot of vocabulary but verb tenses and pronouns – no way. Now I agree learning the foreign language can be very helpful in some areas of the world with very international flavor and in employment and business. But it should be an option in school not a requirement. I think it takes a special skill. What would happen to people if requirements were in the curriculum like mastering a musical instrument or athletic superiority or oil painting or sculpture ? Many people would fail not having the special ability and talent needed.

    • I did pretty well in foreign languages… well, French and Spanish anyway; I was pretty mediocre in Latin and Greek. It was things like physical education that dragged my GPA way down. But the way schools in this country wait until high school to introduce foreign languages is really stupid. If you’re going to teach foreign languages, do it when kids are still very young and able to pick languages up easily.

That is HILARIOUS! And the message is seriously true. Although I have to agree with Carl above as far as learning languages after childhood. It’s so much easier to pick them up when a person is young.
