I mainly play my full-range electric keyboard in either Classic piano mode or full drawbar Organ mode, usually improvising for 1 to 3 hours at a stretch. Alone. With earphones.

But occassionally I’ll draw out one of my 2 Autoharps, tune up, and let it rip, bottom to top, picking and sweep-strumming rhythm.

I cannot play the harp with the finesse of this woman, but I did what I could with MY set of open strings, — and sang too.

In college, I built my first, one-manual harpsichord; Step one is a frame, a thin, floating soundboard, and two opposing sets of tuning pegs — between which I promptly set my set of 48 strings, tuning chromatically up and down from A440 in the center.

so there i was with a set of open strings, an horizontal harp! —

    — a welcome relief break for the long hours making the 48 times 4 little plucking jacks, movement guide, weighting the keys, and seemingly infinite etc etc etc! required to have a working Clavier keyboard, pre-piano forte.

When I hunger for truly open strings, I have only to dismount the mechanical keying housing from my Autoharp and Voila! a Zither!

Thank that clean bit -o- Irish Harp.
