Yes, it’s a real thing, and yes, it doesn’t actually happen until tomorrow, but we’re celebrating a day early.

I love black cats – had one as a kid and then two as an adult.
I’m glad they have their own appreciation day!

I have no objection to black cats. We had one once, but why do they get a special day? Why don’t tabbies, gingers, whites, tortoiseshell and others get a day, too

Because black cats are traditionally seen as bad luck and ‘evil – thanks to hysterically obsessiveness of certain religious sects, and have subsequently been horribly treated and portrayed as such for many centuries because of religious intolerance.
The idea of the ‘day’ is to break down that stigma.

Where I come from, in the north of England, black cats are thought to be lucky. If one crosses your path, you’ll have a good day. Talking to a friend the other day about superstitions, she agreed with me about them being lucky, and had never heard of them being considered unlucky.
Is this another UK/American difference? Although I’ve seen notices near where I live now, in the SE of England about black cat day.

I’ve never understood where that superstition came from.

If you look at the National Daily Calendar (which is good for a few laughs, as well as a fair amount of head-scratching), you’d be amazed at how many things have their own day. I only observe the ones that make for a good blog post. 🙂

I live and learn! I especially found it interesting that National Black Cat Appreciation Day is in August… Completely separate from National Black Cat Day 🙂 Great collection! What would make it complete is a black cat in a box 😉

TWO Black Cat holidays; wow!
I don’t get the reference to the box 🙂
(Suspect I’m gonna have a huge DUH moment when I find out!)

It’s that cats (black or otherwise 🙂) seem to be extremely fond of getting into boxes … Small boxes, big boxes. Search “cat in cardboard box” in your favorite search engine, especially for videos. Your life will not be complete until you spend a few hours on that (and make sure you look for ninja cat, too 🙃). Can’t wait to hear what you think!

I collect pictures of cats in boxes wherever I see them, and save them for Boxing Day. 🙂

Oooo! I can’t wait (and hope there’s more than a once a year opportunity to showcase cats in boxes 🙂)!

Oh! Thank you 🙂
I knew that about cats’ in general fondness for boxes; I’d thought there was something particular about black ones.
Love the photo. Have you seen the photos / videos of big cats and cardboard boxes? Hilarious!

You know what they say, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar 😉
Love those videos (though ninja cat is better still!)

Okay, just TORE myself away from watching Ninja Cat videos!
Thank you for giving me a new way to idle away my own Endless Weekend 😉
You’re right: They are HILARIOUS! More than ever, I wish I had a feline physiology. Must be cool to be able to slide under a door.

Than you for the recommendation, Bob! The penultimate picture shows a Roman Catholic cat. With white colar. Lol
Wish you a beautiful weekend! Michael
Wow, the translator gave me the word “penultimate”, and i am wondering about this word, more and more. Sounds like from another world. 😉

My Regulus would fit right in here, with his black floof and his usually dilated eyes. If you go to the YouTube channel OwlKitty, you will find his doppelganger. (Plus a lot of great clips of movies we didn’t realize had large black cats in them!)

Yesterday, October 27, was National Black Cat Day. Bluebird of Bitterness shows us the beauty of our pitch-black kitties and please, whoever has one of those at home, watch out for them on Halloween. Thank God, my Tjara is an indoor cat.
