Musical offering for the fourth Sunday of Advent

English translation:

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung;
Of Jesse’s lineage coming,
As men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it,
The rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright,
She bore to us a Savior,
When half spent was the night.

O Savior, Child of Mary,
Who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory,
Who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray,
To the bright courts of Heaven,
And to the endless day.

    I closed my eyes and found myself in my small, old, stone church in Germany … our sweaters bundled tightly and warmed by those who chose to celebrate together. How many Christmas Eve nights had to pass for me to appreciate it and for it to make its way back from the crevice of my memory. What a precious gift to me today!!!! Thank you!!!!! Merry Christmas
