Happy birthday, Samuel

Samuel Barber (1910-1981) composed the Adagio for Strings in 1936 as the second movement of his String Quartet in B minor. In 1967 Barber adapted the music into a choral composition, using the words of the Agnus Dei from the Latin Mass. It’s sung here by VOCES8.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
