Reinhold Moricevič Glière (1876-1956) was born in Ukraine to a German father and a Polish mother. He studied music in Kiev and Moscow and became a music teacher, counting among his students Sergei Prokofiev and Aram Khachaturian. Glière composed the music for The Red Poppy ballet in 1927. The most famous dance from the ballet is “Dance of the Sailors from the Soviet Ship,” more commonly referred to as “The Russian Sailors Dance.”
