Musical offering for Epiphany

January 6, 2018

Hail the blest morn! See the great Mediator
Down from the regions of glory descend.
Shepherds, go worship the Babe in the manger;
Lo, for His guard the bright angels attend.
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star in the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

Cold on His cradle the dewdrops are shining;
Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall.
Angels adore Him in slumber reclining;
Maker and Monarch and Savior of all.
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star in the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

Shall we not yield Him in costly devotion
Odors of Eden and offerings divine,
Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;
Star in the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

Musical offering for the twelfth day of Christmas

January 5, 2018

All poor men and humble,
All lame men who stumble,
Come, haste ye, nor feel ye afraid;
For Jesus our treasure
With love past all measure
In lowly poor manger was laid.

The wise men who found Him
Laid rich gifts around Him,
Yet oxen they gave Him their hay;
And Jesus in beauty
Accepted their duty
Contented in manger He lay.

Then haste we to show Him
The praises we owe Him,
Our service He ne’er can despise;
Whose love still is able
To show us the stable
Where softly in manger He lies.

Musical offering for the eleventh day of Christmas

Shepherds called by angels,
Called by angels,
Called by Love and angels.
No place for them but a stable.
My Lord has come.

Sages searching for stars,
Searching for Love in heaven.
No place for them but a stable.
My Lord has come.

His Love will hold me,
His Love will cherish me.
Love will cradle me.

Lead me, lead me to see Him,
Sages and Shepherds and angels.
No place for me but a stable.
My Lord has come.

Musical offering for the tenth day of Christmas

January 3, 2018

O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
iacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Iesum Christum. Alleluia!

O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

In honor of the birthday of American composer Eric Whitacre, here is his “Lux Aurumque,” sung by the National Taiwan University Chorus.

Lux, calida gravisque pura velut aurum,
et canunt angeli molliter modo natum.
Light, warm and heavy as pure gold,
and the angels sing softly to the newborn babe.
