The melody to this song is a centuries-old Irish folk tune, named “Slane” for a hill about ten miles from Tara in County Meath. According to legend, at the time of the spring equinox in 433, King Lóegaire had decreed that no fires were to be lit until he had lit the fire on Tara Hill that marked the beginning of the pagan spring festival, and St. Patrick defied the king by lighting the Paschal candle on Slane Hill on Easter Eve.
