Musical offering for the ninth day of Christmas

January 2, 2020

Sing we now of Christmas,
Noël sing we here;
Hear our grateful praises
To the babe so dear.
Sing we Noël, the king is born, Noël!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we all Noël!

Angels called to shepherds,
“Leave your flocks at rest,
Journey forth to Bethlehem,
Find the child so blest.”
Sing we Noël, the king is born, Noël!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we all Noël!

In Bethlehem they found him,
Joseph and Mary mild,
Seated by the manger,
Watching the holy child.
Sing we Noël, the king is born, Noël!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we all Noël!

Musical offering for the third day of Christmas

December 27, 2019

It’s the birthday of Sir John Goss (1800-1880), who composed the music to “See Amid the Winter’s Snow” in 1871. It’s performed here by the Portland Choir and Orchestra in an arrangement by Dan Forrest.

See amid the winter’s snow,
Born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the lofty skies;
He, who throned in height sublime
Sits amid the cherubim.
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was Thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this.
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Sunday musical offering

September 22, 2019

Death shall not destroy my comfort,
Christ shall guide me through the gloom;
Down He’ll send some heavenly convoy,
To escort my spirit home.

Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Oh, Hallelujah! That I do.
Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Mourners, you may love Him too.

Jordan’s stream shall not o’erflow me,
While my Savior’s by my side;
Canaan, Canaan lies before me;
Soon I’ll cross the swelling tide.

Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Oh, Hallelujah! That I do.
Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Mourners, you may love Him too.

See the happy spirits waiting,
On the banks beyond the stream;
Sweet responses still repeating,
“Jesus! Jesus!” is their theme.

Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Oh, Hallelujah! That I do.
Oh, Hallelujah! How I love my Savior!
Mourners, you may love Him too.

Some beautiful music for the third day of Christmas

December 27, 2016

Happy birthday to our national anthem

September 14, 2016

It’s the 202nd anniversary of the composition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” and I was happy to find this beautiful choral performance that includes the seldom-sung final verse.
